Spread love at Chandra Niwas homestay, Udaipur

By Maitri

Set amidst the rugged landscape of the Aravali Mountains and wide bottomless lakes, Udaipur is home to some of the magnificent palaces of Rajasthan. The pristine and stunning water bodies crown the urban with the title of ‘City of Lakes’.

A 10 min drive away from the city centre, stands the white walls of Chandra Niwas homestay. Decorated with traditional arts, this homestay is a soulful place to dwell in. Besides, the place is associated with an NGO ‘Daan Foundation’ which works for the development of rural children of Udaipur. Being a home to a couple of Saint Bernard, Chandra Niwas is also a top picked homestay for the dog-loving nomads.

Unlike the commercial hotels in the city, Chandra Niwas is a whole-hearted and welcoming space. It caters to all the individual needs of tourists with care and affection. The room interiors, wall hangs, bed sheets, table decors – all are handcrafted by the local villagers. The homestay has a small communal area and a library as well. While the communal area has some local crafts on a sale, the library is stuffed with travel books and DVDs.

Away from the touristy crowd, Chandra Niwas is a place full of heart. It is decked up with all modern facilities and has a rooftop restaurant, an organic vegetable garden and a sprawling lawn. A home-cooked meal, both lunch and dinner is prepared for the guest on a request. The staff helps tourists with local sightseeing tours and car rentals. Rural excursions, Hindi classes, cooking classes and animal rides are also organized for the tourists at an extra cost. Nevertheless, Chandra Niwas is the place where one who wishes to dig deep into the indigenous trends of Rajasthan, India.

In addition, guests coming from social work backgrounds and NGO experience can visit the rural education centres of Daan Foundation. They can enjoy their Udaipur stay for a longer time and volunteer in the education of rural children.

But what about the guests who visit Udaipur with a soul purpose to relax and travel?

‘We set up the right expectations. Most of the people who come here are the ones who are either dog lovers or those who are interested in social work. We also get guests who are just travelers but we have staff who manages them well. So, it really doesn’t stop us from doing our work with the community’, utters Dr. Samvit Audichya, the owner of Chandra Niwas homestay.

Being virtuous and setting up the positive prospect about their small business needs has made the place quite familiar among both Indian and foreign travellers. In near future, there are plans of starting a bigger accommodation for students and a primary school in rural areas.
