WTD 2023: Tourism and Green Investments

By Netpal Travel Bureau

On September 27, 2023, the world will celebrate World Tourism Day, an annual event that raises awareness about the importance of tourism and its potential to contribute to sustainable development. This year’s theme, “Tourism and Green Investments,” is a timely reminder that we need to invest in the sustainable development of the tourism sector in order to protect our planet and ensure that future generations can enjoy its beauty and wonders.

Tourism is a powerful economic engine, contributing trillions of dollars to the global economy and supporting millions of jobs around the world. However, tourism can also have a negative impact on the environment and local communities, if not managed sustainably.

Green investments in tourism can help to reduce the sector’s environmental footprint and create a more sustainable and inclusive tourism industry. For example, green investments can be used to develop renewable energy sources for hotels and resorts, reduce waste and pollution, and support local communities.

On this World Tourism Day, we call on governments, businesses, and individuals to work together to invest in a sustainable tourism future. By investing in green tourism, we can protect our planet, create jobs, and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to experience the wonders of travel.

Hotels and resorts can invest in renewable energy sources, like solar and wind power, to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels. The restaurants can reduce their use of single-use plastics and source food from local suppliers. The tour operators can offer sustainable activities, like hiking, biking, and kayaking, that minimize their impact on the environment. Governments can invest in public transportation to tourist destinations and develop sustainable tourism infrastructure, like green spaces and walking trails.

Individuals can also play a role in promoting sustainable tourism by making choices that support green businesses and practices. By working together, we can create a sustainable tourism future that benefits everyone.
