Travel theme tune of 2022

With Omicron receding, the industry is hopeful for a significant rebound in spring and summer. Here’s what we can expect, in the air, at the destinations, hospitalities and further ahead.

As governments across the world have relaxed coronavirus restrictions and shifted their approach to accepting Covid-19 as a manageable part of everyday life, the travel industry is growing confident that this will be the year that travel comes thriving back.

Travel agents and operators have reported a substantial increase in bookings in recent weeks for the upcoming spring and summer seasons. The World Travel & Tourism Council (W.T.T.C.), which represents the global travel and tourism industry, projects that travel and tourism will reach pre-pandemic levels in 2022.

While uncertainty remains over the course of the pandemic and government policies on mask mandates and testing requirements for travel, the industry is seeing a strong desire among travelers to take big bucket list trips this year, particularly to far-flung international destinations.

Destinations like Australia, the Philippines and Indonesia that have long been closed to most of the travelers in 2021, have started reopening. Airlines have been gradually adding back old routes and expanding with new ones.

That flight for a summer getaway could cost less than it did before the pandemic. Fares are down 18 percent from 2019. In January, the cost of international airfares purchased hit an all-time low.

Study reports that the hotel industry in the country is on the path of recovery with higher occupancy, increased average room rates (ARR) and spurt in merger and acquisition deals.
